Many people may not realize the importance of the health of their teeth and gums. A periodontist is a dental specialist who treats periodontal disease. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a bacterial infection that infects the gum tissue causing inflammation, redness, swelling and loss of bone around the teeth. It can affect one tooth or many.

There are several types of gum surgeries that your dentist might recommend if you’ve developed gum disease. Some examples of these are periodontal flap surgery and gum grafting.
